Veteran dad launches military nappy bags

08 September 2020

Gold Coast veteran Ash Burke has recently embarked on a new business venture – aimed at supporting young dads and giving back to veterans in need.

When new-dad Ash Burke couldn’t find a nappy bag to suit his style, he set about finding a solution. One year on, The TactiCOOL Dad was born.

In an effort to provide new parents with high-quality nappy bags that had all the necessities, but none of the frills, Ash created a range of military-looking nappy bags with a purpose.

$5 from every bag sold is donated directly to Mates4Mates to support veterans with service-related injuries.

As a veteran himself, Ash said it is a cause close to his heart.

“I served in the Australian Army for over four years, including in Afghanistan. After discharging in 2018 I found that you can lose your path a bit and your sense of purpose,” he said.

“My newborn son helped give me purpose, but I still felt I needed some direction.

“I wanted to do something that would motivate me and also help other people - designing and selling nappy bags that support an important cause has given me that direction back.”

Ash also currently works as a Close Protection Officer, leading security details for some of Australia’s top celebrities and VIP corporate clients, but is hoping to transition to work full-time on The TactiCOOL Dad when it expands.

The bags currently come in three different styles, with a selection of additional pouches available to purchase.

Ash said that while the nappy bags had a military-look, they were practical for all parents, not just veterans.

“A lot of people want to support Australian businesses, so this is a great way to do that,” he said.

“Our nappy bags also help raise important awareness of Mates4Mates.

“When I discharged, I masked my own issues as I wasn’t aware of what support I could get, so I want to make sure others know that there is support available for them.”

After just two months since the launch, The TactiCOOL Dad bags have proven to be a success.

“We’ve had a lot more support than we anticipated with people from around Australia and internationally buying a bag and supporting Mates4Mates,” he said.

“Thank you to everyone who has supported us so far. The more support we get, the more products we can create and the more we can donate to Mates4Mates.”
